Gulfstream's jet set a speed record

The Gulfstream G650 is the biggest and best private jet $US65 million ($77.6 million) can buy.

It's also the fastest certified civilian aircraft, reaching an average speed of 568.5 miles (914.9 km) per hour.

To prove it, Gulfstream took the G650 on a record-setting flight, circling the globe in just 41 hours, 7 minutes.

That's the fastest time for a westbound flight to circle the globe in a non-supersonic aircraft.

The National Aeronautic Association (NAA) and the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale recognised the record in September.

Gulfstream's president Larry Flynn called it a momentous occasion for business aviation, showing off both the speed and range of the G650.

"The aircraft performed flawlessly," pilot-in-command Tom Horne said in a Gulfstream press release.

Covering 20,310 nautical miles, the G650 started and ended its around-the-world flight in San Diego, with stops in Guam, Dubai and Cape Verde. Five pilots shared the journey.

‘Good occupation’ leads TAP to increase winter flights to Gatwick Plus twice weekly flights 2 Boa Vista Cape Verde Islands

National airline TAP is to bump up its winter flights between the Portuguese and British capitals after announcing it will be increasing its weekly flights to Gatwick by three.

Last winter the airline operated eight weekly flights to Gatwick. This winter it will operate eleven.
An airline spokesperson told The Portugal News that the increase was due to the “good occupancy” registered on its Lisbon-Gatwick flights.
Throughout the coming winter season, which starts on 27 October, the national flag-carrier will operate 49 flights a week between Lisbon and London; 38 to Heathrow and 11 to Gatwick.
From Oporto it will operate 14 weekly flights between Lisbon and Gatwick, and the airline will fly from Funchal (Madeira), to London seven times per week.
In summer TAP flies from Funchal to Gatwick, whereas in winter it flies to Heathrow.
The airline also flies seven times a week from Lisbon to Manchester, thus operating a total of 77 weekly flights between Portugal and the UK.
There are no direct TAP flights between the UK and Faro (Algarve).
Furthermore, during the coming winter season, October-March, TAP will be introducing two new destinations into its network with twice-weekly flights to Boavista (Cape Verde) and five flights a week to Tangier (Morocco).

A Massachusetts-based developer has secured five memorandums of understanding (MOU) to develop renewable energy-powered seawater desal projects in the Cape Verde islands, off Africa’s west coast. Brian Kuhn, Aeronautica Windpower’s director of development, told WDR that the MOUs outline water purchase agreements (WPA) with four local municipalities and a local water company under which Aeronautica would provide desalinated seawater.

TOURISM UP & UP & UP - CAPE VERDE SEES 9,6% INCREASE OF HOTEL UNITS

 

 

According to the Cape Verdean National Statistics Institute (INE), the number of hotel units in Cape Verde have risen by an incredible 9.6 percent in 2011. The increases in hotel units cover hotels, inns and also tourist villages.

The rise itself saw a total of 195 Cape Verde hotel units as opposed to 178 in 2010. 

Cape Verde’s hotel units also offered a significant increase of room, beds and places. The figures researched by the INE showed that these hotel units offered accommodation of 7,900 rooms, 14,000 beds and 17,000 places which grew by 34.1 percent, 23.5 percent and 22.8 percent respectively from the 2010 statistics. 

The islands of Sal and Boa Vista contain the most hotel units within the region. In fact, the island of Sal contains 44.7 percent of the overall hotel units compared to Boa Vista which contains 31.1 percent.

São Vicente has the largest increase of hotel units which saw an increase of five units, swiftly following Santo Antão and Maio with three and four respectively. 

Employment has definitely increased due to the 9.6 percent increase of hotel units in Cape Verde. Within the INE report, employment within the hotel units increased by an astonishing 27.6 percent since 2010. This increase saw 5,100 people becoming employed all due to the rise of tourism in Cape Verde.
